You can get a current phone for under R500 a month, but only if you pick the right network. We compared the lowest price each network lists for every phone at R500 a month or less over 36 months: 93 phone and network combinations across Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom. At R500 a month, 36 months costs R18 000 in total. We use 36 months and only deals open to new customers.

Prices are as read on 22 October 2026, and a price changed that day, so check the figure when you buy.

Bold is the lowest monthly price. A dash means we hold no price at or under R500 for that phone on that network, which is not the same as the network not selling it. Vodacom's Galaxy A27 price is on a Red Flexi plan, which has no fixed data allowance, so it is not comparable.

The same phone can cost up to about R2 900 more over the contract depending on the network, so compare the total, not the headline. Totals are the monthly price times 36, with no upfront payment recorded.

Vodacom lists phones from R179 a month (such as the Vivo Y05e and Honor X5c Plus), but those are on Red Flexi plans, a rand-value airtime and data bundle with no fixed gigabyte allowance, so they cannot be compared per gigabyte with the plans above.

Where the money goes

  • Storage is cheap here. The 256GB Galaxy A37 at Cell C is R349, the same as a 128GB phone on some plans.
  • Data is the catch. Most plans at this price carry 1GB to 2GB. If you use more, the plan, not the phone, is what you will pay for.
  • Newer costs more. The Galaxy A57 is R50 to R130 a month dearer than the A37 on the same network (R1 800 to R4 680 over 36 months).

What to watch for

  • Prices move, and they moved on the day we read them. MTN raised the 128GB iPhone 16e from R449 to R499 on 22 October 2026.
  • The plans are not identical. We show the lowest price on each network, not a like-for-like data comparison.
  • Some Telkom deals have no storage size recorded. We show them but do not treat them as a like-for-like comparison.
  • Contract length matters. A 24-month contract costs more a month and usually less in total. See how a contract's total cost adds up.
  • Black Friday is on 27 November. Any deal should beat the prices here. See the Black Friday prices to beat.

How to choose

  1. Set the total, not just the monthly price. R500 a month is R18 000.
  2. Pick the phone first, then compare networks for that phone.
  3. Check the data the price includes.
  4. Compare 24 and 36 months side by side.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest phone contract in South Africa?
With a fixed data allowance, the cheapest we found over 36 months is the OPPO A5 128GB at Cell C: R219 a month on Elevate 1+ with 1.5GB (R7 884 in total). Vodacom lists phones from R179 a month, but on Red Flexi plans that carry no fixed data allowance.
How much is a Samsung Galaxy A37 on contract?
The 256GB Galaxy A37 is R349 a month over 36 months at Cell C (1.5GB, R12 564 in total), R399 at MTN (1GB, R14 364) and R429 at Vodacom (1GB, R15 444). Telkom lists it at R399 with 2GB, but its storage size is not recorded.
What is the cheapest iPhone on contract?
The 128GB iPhone 16e is the cheapest iPhone we found: R479 a month over 36 months at Vodacom (1GB, R17 244), R499 at MTN (1GB, R17 964). MTN raised its price from R449 to R499 on 22 October 2026. Telkom lists R489 with 2GB, but no storage size is recorded.
Which network is cheapest for phone contracts under R500?
It depends on the phone. Cell C is cheapest for the Galaxy A37, MTN for the Galaxy A57 (R449), OPPO A6 and Honor 600 Lite, and Vodacom for the iPhone 16e. The gap between the cheapest and dearest network on the same phone is often R50 to R80 a month, or R1 800 to R2 880 over 36 months, though it is only R20 on the iPhone 16e.
Is a contract cheaper than buying the phone?
Not necessarily. A contract price covers the phone and a plan, so compare the total (monthly price times 36) with the phone's cash price plus the cost of the same plan on its own. We do not record a cash price for these deals.
